Maybe then they can finally choose light or dark themes for their applications. Mixing them in different uses messes with my icon themes. And does not make sense.
I think that using a dark theme for multimedia stuff (e.g., Totem, Image Viewer...) is kinda clever.
Right now it's a complete mess, I agree. That's why they are using symbolic icons (SVG files) for toolbars, sidebars, etc. now; using them lets the theme designers to choose what colour the icons should be in their themes.
Not too shabby. It will be nice to see what happens when the GNOME 3 HIG is finalized and people can start making confident decisions about modernizing their application designs.
